Twenty year old Allie worked had spent all her working life as a shelf stacker in a supermarket but wanted a new challenge. She desperately wanted to work in a local cafe however
I've always enjoyed a Katie Fforde book and this one immediately appealed. These Quick Reads books may be short, with just under 100 pages, but they do contain a fully fledged short story, as much as is possible. As an added bonus, this book also contains 3 recipes at the back, all of which are referred to in the story.Twenty year old Allie worked had spent all her working life as a shelf stacker in a supermarket but wanted a new challenge. She desperately wanted to work in a local cafe however her lack of cooking skills was a definite disadvantage. Also dragging her down was her longterm boyfriend Ryan. A lazy little toerag who treated her like dirt and who she was really still with out of habit. She lived with her dad, and with Edith and Rita, her interfering work colleagues always criticising, her life really wasn't much fun.
As it is such a short story I won't go into details, but Saving the Day is a really enjoyable uplifting story about finding the courage to make changes, never being afraid to learn something new and making your own opportunities – and how showing kindness to others can pay dividends when you need help yourself. There are several delicious foody references – see recipes above together with some engaging characters – and the not so likeable! To prevent the story being overly sweet, there is a little bit of drama for that extra bite!
I've bought many of these Quick Reads over the years – they are quality reads and always enjoyable.
...moreI have read many a quick read and I understand they are a bit more succinct and to-the-point, but this one was as if it was written for a five-year old, it was so simple and dull I almost fell asleep in the bath with it and drowned myself.
Cringe-worthy read, just DONT EVEN BOTHER.
It gets a 2 star from me because it had a couple of recipes at the end.
Allie is bored with her job, and her boyfriend! When she sees a vacancy advertised at her favourite cafe she takes the plunge and applies - despite being a very novice cook!! But with the help of a very lovely nei
What a perfect little treat of a book! It's a story that will leave you smiling and having all the feels as you follow Allie on her journey in claiming back and life and doing what makes her happy! Ooh and there are recipes!!! It's a book that is good for your soul - and your stomach!!!Allie is bored with her job, and her boyfriend! When she sees a vacancy advertised at her favourite cafe she takes the plunge and applies - despite being a very novice cook!! But with the help of a very lovely neighbour, she gets a crash course in the basics and suddenly her life starts to make her smile again.
What I loved was seeing Allie taking control of her life! She knew it wasn't working for her, so she grabbed an opportunity to change it! A lesson for us all!! And with her changing the course of her life, it sets changes up for others around her too. But with good news comes bad, and it starts to worry Allie that her happiness may be shortlived!
I loved this little glimpse into the life of Allie! And it was also a wonderful little break from life with a Quick Reads - being able to sit down, read a book, escape the world for a short while, and then get back to reality. We all need that break more than ever, so these bite sized books are the perfect way for us all to jump into another world!

I did feel like Allie was written as a much younger character that she was supposed to be but overall enjoyable, simple, with good flow.
Bought this because:
1. I like the concept of quick reads from the Reading Agency and there were some available from authors I love like Oyinkan Braithwaite so I thought "what could go wrong?"
2. I never read books like this. By "like this" I guess I mean commercial women's fiction? The sort of Jill Mansell vibe my mum was on in the 00s. Anyway wanted to give it a go cos it looked cute and who doesn't love completel

3. It was £1.
Unfortunately, it was quite shit. Like… this is the adult equivalent of Biff, Chip and Kipper. I don't know why I expected more. I've enjoyed similar authors in the past, when I finished uni I had a volunteer job reviewing romance books like this and some of those were great reads, but this is really condescending. I get that the point here is accessibility and getting non readers reading again, but the language was so basic and repetitive and the plot was ridiculous. Boring, expected more!
I do plan on reading two other 'quick reads': The Skylight by Louise Candlish and The Baby is Mine by Oyinkan Braithwaite. My hopes are much higher for both.

I like the idea behind quick reads, I think it's brilliant. But being an avid reader, it is not the right read for me, because when a story is good, like this one, I don't want it to end so soon.A throughly enjoyable quick story, definitely recommended for readers in their 20s and early 30s.

Allie might only be young but she already feels like her whole life is mapped out for her. Working at the local supermarket, marriage to her childhood sweetheart Ryan, never going anywhere or doing anything. She's not even sure if she likes Ryan who seems to treat her like a domestic servant, lolling around issuing orders. Then one day Allie sees an advert in the window of a small café, the sort of place she'd love to go to and have a cake and a coffee with friends, she also quite likes the look of one of the guys who works there, help wanted it says. Unfortunately Allie can't cook, at all. All she does is microwave or cook ready meals or frozen prepared foods. She's never made a cake or cooked a roast dinner from scratch. But if learning to cook is the passport to her dream job then Allie is going to do whatever it takes.
This is a sweet novella about not letting your current circumstances prevent you from achieving your dreams. About taking a chance and reaching for the impossible. About believing in yourself and not listening to the doomsayers and doubters.
I loved it, but it was too short LOL.
I was given a free copy of this book by the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Finding a dream job, eyeing up a much more suitable candidate for a life partner, and meeting a wonderful olde I've read Katie Fforde's books for years and loved the idea of getting a small dose of her storytelling in this Quick Read.

Finding a dream job, eyeing up a much more suitable candidate for a life partner, and meeting a wonderful older woman who ends up giving her the boost she needs, to improve her future, it all falls into place for Allie, but not without a little drama.
As I said, before, it is a cute story but I really wanted to dig deeper into the characters, and the story! Katie Fforde, you might just have to develop this one a bit more and make it full length!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion. ...more
This quick read is about Allie, a twenty year old. She yearns to change things in her life and the story follows her as she attempts to do this.
Somehow the author manages to cram quite a lot into this quick read making it a delight to read.
Highly recommended for anyone wanting a feel good uplifting read.
Allie wants to better herself and at least learn to cook this is what she sets out to achieve.
I really enjoyed this little delight, a perfect quick read, plus the added bonus of recipes at the end.
One of my favourite authors. This is a nice book with a happy ending and the recipes at the end is an added bonus
Another quick read and I loved this fun story. Allie grew in confidence throughout the book and it was lovely to read. A classic happy ending. 3.5 🌟

Points for an interesting plot and yes this is a quick read, a lot is really contained within and yes it is uplifting. It was also sickeningly sweet, cheesy, too straight forward, twee. I haven't read any of Katie Ffords stuff but I'm put off her writing style.Edit: Four days later, after contemplating some more and reviewing for my blog, I've realised how much I hated this. My rating has been downgraded to one star. It was juvenile, extremely unrealistic. More simplistic that most teenage and young adult novels I've read. It's been a while since I hated a read this much. It wasn't uplifting. It was depressing. BECAUSE LIFE ISN'T THAT SIMPLE.
I'm taking this off my reading challenge I don't want it on there.
...moreOn a personal note I think that initiatives such as this are really helpful. Libraries and bookshops can be intimidating for those who have not found the joys of reading, and a display of these quick to read books which can inspire interest can be a welcoming sight. I also used these books when helping a reading group at a local library who had issues with reading or for whom English was a new challenge. Being able to finish a short book offers a great sense of achievement, especially when the writing is good and the book offers a worthwhile read. Also, anyone who has read this blog during the last year or so will know that reading books has kept me sane in lockdown months!
When I was offered a choice of the 2021 books to read and review, I chose Katie Fforde's "Saving the Day" as I have read several of her books over the years. At 86 pages of large type it is a short read, though there are also three recipes at the end of the book which relate to the story.
The story is about Allie, a twenty year old who is pretty fed up with her life. She works in a supermarket with some overly bossy women, lives with her father and has an appalling boyfriend. The only bright spot is a cafe which she passes every day which looks so friendly. When she spots a card advertising a job in the window, she knows that she must learn to cook to stand a chance of her dream job, and potentially more.
This is as well written as Fforde's other books, though on a smaller scale. In a short space she has created some memorable characters and a satisfying read. Her fans will find an enjoyable read and a taste of her longer novels. Those who read this book as their first Fforde may well be inspired to find her other books, and the many books of similar writers.
This is only one of six books that offer a wide variety of titles, at least one of which should tempt anyone even if they would not see themselves as readers. If you venture into bookshops or libraries in the near future, why not have a look at these or any of the many books produced in the Quick Reads series. You may find yourself tempted, and if you buy one soon you could help someone else!

I have received Saving The Day by Katie Fforde and I loved it. It truly was a quick read and I was able to indulge myself over a lunchtime. Its a really uplifting story, easy to read and really gave me such a boost! It even has recipes in it so was an absolute winner for me…cheese scones…yes please!

Allie wants more from her life and after seeing an advert in her favourite cafe for staff she decides that a fresh start is what's needed. Only problem is.. she can't cook, but that's not going to stop her, next on her list to get rid of the boyfriend! Oh Ryan the boyfriend, what an absolute slob! Never have I hated a character as much as him!
Allie is such a lovely character to read about, I felt sorry for her on a few occasions but I loved her determination. The story is fast paced and so much happens within such a short time but I loved it.
This was my first Katie Fforde and I'm excited to read more of her books, short stories are always a handy way to try out a new author and I almost certainly wasn't disappointed! Oh and a bonus was finding a few recipes in the back! May have to give them a go!

I also like the background to the "Quick Reads" series; they are written with the aim of engaging and inspiring "emergent" readers in an attempt to improve the UK's adult literacy situation - where it's estimated that 1 in 6 adults find reading difficult, and 1 in 3 do not read for pleasure! Kudos to Katie Fforde and the rest of the authors taking part in this great initiative! Find out more here if you are interested:

Saving the Day is a cute little story from one of my favourite romance authors. Despite its modern setting it takes the reader back to easier times without the muddles of online dating and other technology.
Allie hates her job in the supermarket and isn't keen on boyfriend Ryan either so when a job comes up at the cafe she passes on her way to work each day, effectively her dream job she knows she needs to do two things to get the job and a better life. Firstly, learn to cook and secondly get rid of Ryan.

Katie Fforde is the best-selling author of 'A Wedding in the Country' and numerous others, but I've actually never read anything by her before. Although on the surface 'Saving the Day' is a cute chick lit book, there is a strong underlying message that life is what you make of it and that women in the 21st century have choices and they should be grabbed at every opportunity. Really enjoyed it.
...moreI did not like Ryan. I actually hated him. And he definitely gave a somewhat sour twist on an otherwise lovely story. But, I definitely recognised the type of boy he was and felt for Allie all the way.
Cute, fluffy and sweet just like the treats Allie is learning to cook - this was a brilliant story about making changes and finding your happiness.

Katie was elected the twenty-fifteenth Chairman (2009-2011) of the Romantic Novelists' Association. She is delighted to have been chosen as Chair of the Romantic Novelists' Association and says, "Catherine Jones was a wonderful chair and she's a very tough act to follow. However, I've been a member of the RNA for more years than I can actually remember and will have its very best interests at the core of everything I do."
Katie lives in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England with her husband, some of her three children and many pets. Recently her old hobbies of ironing and housework have given way to singing, Flamenco dancing and husky racing. She claims this keeps her fit.
